James qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked as a Finance Director and General Manager in fashion retail before joining McKinsey's Consumer Practice in 1998. He undertook a series of managerial and expert roles before moving to McKinsey's Strategic & Change Communications Practice, where he led the European team. He retired from McKinsey in 2024 to concentrate on writing, research and coaching, together with board appointments for charities and a wholesale fashion business. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Psychology from UCL and Birkbeck and a PhD in English Literature from King's College London.
