Think Networks. How business in Germany can be successful "despite everything"
Germany slips from gold to bronze in logistics rankings, industrial companies threaten to leave, the desolate state of the infrastructure is a constant topic: We talk ourselves down and have to be careful not to generate a self-fulfilling prophecy. Let's leave the ideologically driven discussion behind and look at how we can do things better together in order to shape the global "turning-point" in our favor – business in solidarity with politics and society. To do this, we need openness, trust, and the willingness to look beyond the confines of our own company.
Networks beat individual solutions: Collaboration for flexibility and transparency in supply chains
Materials trading and the design of global supply chains are undergoing a profound transformation. In a world characterized by uncertainty, conflicting goals and dynamic complexity, digital solutions must be used to create a basis for decision-making and transparency in order to act flexibly, efficiently and sustainably. The challenges here can be can only be solved in a collaborative network approach with all players along the entire value chain.
Departure into the digital continuum
With large language models such as ChatGPT, artificial intelligence processes are conquering logistics. AI becomes a daily tool and closes autonomous process chains. A "digital continuum" is emerging in which AI not only provides information, but actively controls, negotiates, or plans. This development was predictable – yet the speed at which the change is taking place is surprising. Logistics is once again facing a turning point and a departure into a digital continuum.

In politics, it is called a "turning point". For military logistics, this means new challenges: Planning and controlling comprehensive logistics services, stockpiling spare parts, operating supplies and ammunition, vehicle and weapons maintenance, military transports and much more in a threat situation. "Customers" are soldiers of a combat brigade when they are deployed to Lithuania on short notice to secure NATO's eastern flank. Heavy, highly mobile equipment such as armored recovery vehicles and heavy-duty transporters are indispensable tools serving our troops. Logistic, military, multinational and human tasks need to be mastered – adaptively, innovatively, and highly professionally. A profound expert shares his knowledge in a live podcast.
Digital and ecological transformation as well as demographic change are shaping the future strategies of companies. Crises require rapid adaptation and robust structures. Personnel bottlenecks and shortages of skilled workers have a massive impact: unfilled positions put the brakes on innovations, investments in new technologies and growth for future generations. Even more than today, successful companies in the future will be those that inspire their employees and act as a attractive employers exist. A "people mindset," unconventional approaches and the promotion of diversity in the organization are crucial.

Despite a high degree of automation, people are a key success factor in logistics. In order to find out how companies in logistics can best take care of their employees and position themselves as attractive employers, the topic will be examined from four perspectives in a World Café and discussed with all participants. How do you manage employees in the age of mobile office? How can a company proactively deal with upcoming generational change and promote understanding between different generations?
Generations improve? What challenges do SMEs face? And how can we achieve a cultural change on the store floor so that operational employees receive the appreciation and mentoring they deserve?
Every industry is struggling with decarbonization of energy and mobility systems, and shortages of raw materials call for a resource-saving economy. Not only ecological, but also social requirements, as well as technical innovations are driving the process forward. Gradually the issue of remapping the global supply chains is gaining ground in all markets. A development breaking up traditional industry structures and networks is giving rise to new value chains. Futureproof innovations will become key growth drivers. The future is now.
An effective fulfilment network leads to shorter delivery times, greater customer satisfaction and improved competitiveness. It enables scalability for peak times and seasonal demand. The choice between in-house and pre-packaged solutions depends on deployment requirements. In-house offers control and tailored processes but requires high investment. Prepackaged solutions offer expertise but have limited customizability. In-house fulfilment solutions as a new business model generate revenue and optimize resource deployment but require careful planning and management of customer expectations. Panelists will share their experiences in order to foster dialogue with audience members.
The software landscape in logistics is very diverse. Many solutions include in-house developments. However, functionalities like tracking require a high level of system integration. Costs for the resulting interfaces are high. A likely future development is the rise of logistics software ecosystems or operation systems which enable a simple integration of software services. Some of these ecosystems already started operating. In this session we want to talk to companies who are involved in these systems. We especially want to find out which differences may exist between them.
The drive for sustainability and the electrification of the logistics of Daimler Trucks comes with some unique challenges and chances. These go far beyond the obvious questions.
We will explore implemented real life examples of deploying AI and analytics to plan, optimize and manage supply chain networks. The session will explore the overall approach of case studies, what to expect and achieved benefits, best in class tools with their latest developments, limitations and IT integration needs. We will explain why data quality is always a challenge but never an excuse.

What challenges does the digitalisation of logistics processes pose for the insurance industry? And how can a successful integration become real added value for its own customers?
This Half-Hour Session is supported by the SCHUNCK Group
Modern tools play an important role in inspiring people to continue working in logistics in the future. AI-enabled robotics can eliminate repetitive or physically demanding tasks. A wide variety of containers can be automatically picked without pre-programming. Knowledge gathered by one robot can be shared with other robots in different locations via the cloud. As a result, humans gain new insights that can be incorporated into material flows and work processes. In this way, the networking of man and machine will help to better meet customers' short-term requirements.
After three exceptional years, logistics needs to face the new realities. This continues to require the know-how and personal networks of logistics professionals. In addition, new technologies are opening up fantastic opportunities to create even greater added value for customers from data. An industry expert puts the situation in perspective.

It is all about embracing the cutting-edge and pushing the boundaries of what‘s possible. The panel starts with painting the Big Picture and busting some myths before looking carefully into real use cases. The goal is to unravel the challenges and opportunities that come with AI technology, to tell the difference between Buzzwording and Doing.
Sustainability is high on the agenda, both for logistics professionals when transforming their area of responsibility and at C-level when transforming business models.
Energy supply and energy carriers play a central role in terms of supply reliability, variance in energy costs, geographical and temporal availability when supplying buildings, automated processes and, of course, in (electrified) transportation.
In order to find a proper approach, in addition to the strategic planning elements related to supply chain management, network and risk management, we also present suitable approaches for handling e-mobility, digitizing logistics processes and automating the material flow in our master class.
This results in a triad of offerings that extend to automation, digitization and decarbonization, with which we can comprehensively support those responsible in the supply chain and logistics to deal effectively and efficiently with the new challenges.
Soaring costs, excessive regulation and the necessity of a sustainable economic system are heavily impacting Europe‘s chemical and pharmaceutical sector. The industrial competitiveness is at stake. At the same time, companies face weak consumer demand resulting in a worrying business performance and development. In response, companies have initiated efficiency programs and started to aim for carbon neutrality. SCM and logistics play a crucial role, as shifting towards renewable raw materials and energy requires adaptions. To become even more resilient, decision makers need to review their supply network design considering the changing geopolitical environment, increasing protectionism and infrastructural deficits. What are suitable approaches for them to cope with this demanding situation?
According to the UN, India is the most populous country in the world. The economy is growing by more than six percent a year. By 2030, the country should have risen to become the third-largest economy, according to New Delhi's goal. Currently, the country is also benefiting from Western companies reducing their dependence on China. "This is India's moment!" says head of government Modi. It should be noted that India has undeniably achieved great success in recent years and is, for example, much more integrated into the world market. 2000 German companies are already present. There are undoubtedly special challenges, and a more intensive engagement with the Indian market appears to be absolutely sensible. Experts discuss India's role in the world and give their assessment of opportunities and challenges for the involvement of European companies.
A "per unit" pricing model has prevailed in the logistics market for decades,
Although this is justified as a standard for conventional services such as containers, air freight and road transport, it has far more disadvantages than advantages when it comes to selling technically sophisticated and "green" logistics products: it creates a deceptive comparability with the competition, and logistics service providers sell themselves too cheaply with this pricing model. far below the value they ultimately bring to their customers.
This session will use a practical example to explain possible alternatives that make added values visible and enable providers to monetize products and services appropriately. Followed by a discussion with the audience.
The transaction market in transport and logistics services is on the move. Multiple crises and a tense overall economic situation have slowed down the takeover boom in 2022. But whether it's a mega-deal, a merger or a takeover, for investors it's all about diversifying risks, making supply chains more resilient and expanding their own portfolios. Increasingly, infrastructure targets are also moving into the M&A focus in order to maintain their own position within the global supply chain. Which impact does all this have on supply and demand in the logistics market? Answers are provided by stakeholders in this sequence.
The session offers a platform to explore innovative approaches from India and discuss their applicability in European and German logistics companies. Speakers will present promising business models, technologies and trends able to increase efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness in the logistics industry. The interactive discussion enables the exchange of experiences, challenges and opportunities between Indian and German experts in order to jointly shape new paths for the future of logistics.
Four finalists were selected by the jury in the run-up to the congress - after the grand awards ceremony on Wednesday evening, the winner will present himself and his team and explain the concept of the submitted project. project. Is it Greenplan with its innovative navigation solution, Modility with its booking platform for intermodal transports, Hermes with its "Green Delivery Hamburg" project or the project of a digital twin in general cargo logistics by DACHSER and Fraunhofer IML?
Let’s have some fun by looking at some of the hottest new AI tools that anybody in logistics can use today to make daily office life easier.

Global Supply Chains used to be a No-Brainer – global, fluently running and cost reducing. That was before Covid and the Russian attack on Ukraine. A lot has changed. Geopolitics plays a much greater role these days. Is China still a trustworthy partner? What about the Taiwan conflict? Which are the consequences of the US Inflation Reduction Act? Is re- or nearshoring an option? Where does the necessary energy for manufacturing in Germany come from in the future? What are promising consumption markets overseas? All these questions have to be raised and answered by shippers and logistics service providers alike. The consequence: Supply Chains have become a strategic top priority for business leaders. Let´s talk about it – with a C-level panel looking at the matter from different angles.
Hacker attacks in industry and also in logistics are increasing, but how should they be dealt with? Based on an extensive survey within the BVL network, this sequence will provide you with insights into the understanding of cybersecurity in business sector. Concerning the current threat situation, cybersecurity in logistics is a highly topical issue that still receives far too little attention in many companies. In addition, new European directives are creating new requirements that explicitly relate to cyber security of logistics chains and thus affect a large number of companies in the industry.
The results of this study make it possible to give concrete recommendations for action at political and corporate level and to back these with statistical data.

The energy transition poses major challenges for logistics properties: They need to be developed in a sustainable and ESG-compliant manner, while at the same time being economical. In addition, the transformation to e-mobility is making high demands without there being any mandatory requirements for this. The BVL's logistics real estate focus group tackles the issues that the transformation brings with it and presents, for example, a recommended course of action for the storage of lithium-ion batteries. With the "Power of Logistics" initiative, it focuses on the topics of energy generation and energy efficiency, has launched a pilot project for measuring consumption data and is developing a guide for the important topic of "PV ready". How this works and how logistics properties become fit for the future is presented in this session.
Consumer goods logistics continues to face significant disruptions and a steadily increasing cost pressure – at the same time, sustainability is gaining importance and must be taken into consideration. Transparency is intended to further increase efficiency, making integrated solutions mandatory. But what exactly characterizes successful supply chains? Where has digitalization already been successfully implemented and what insights can be drawn from these supply chain transformations? In this session, we present three examples from the consumer goods industry: This is followed by a brief discussion round.

Sustainable logistics and its challenges are still on everyone's lips. What is changing, however, are the demands on companies in logistics. Increasingly, emissions balances are required in tenders, and sustainability reporting obligations apply to more and more companies, especially smaller ones. The EU Taxonomy Regulation and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will gradually affect the entire business sector. Now is the time to address the tasks and learn from others. In addition to the EU Tax Regulation and the CSRD, this three-part technical sequence will also highlight and discuss the logistics potential in the Circular Economy.
Those responsible in the logistics and supply chain management sector are also concerned about the topic of "energy transition". Their success is of the highest socio-economic relevance for the location. All companies have to deal with the security and price levels of their energy supply. Do existing energy procurement systems still work, which distinguish between suppliers and consumers or distribution? Can a more expedient alternative be developed across sectors, decentrally and in joint action by business and municipalities/government? There is a lot of need for orientation and discussion on how to tackle the challenges. The high-level panel will discuss solutions, necessities and concrete pilot projects.
Skill shortages, AI, automation, and sustainability - the world of logistics is changing. At the same time, stress and dissatisfaction are on the rise, and emotional loyalty to employers is often on the decline. Managers need to think together with employees about career prospects: What will become of our jobs? What is important to us and where do we want to go together? Participants in this workshop will learn and discuss methods and approaches that can help clarify these questions. Among other things, they will get to know the "Scenona Cards - Future Journey" and the "Future Job Journey". The workshop is aimed at logistics managers who are interested in using elements of career coaching and tools for developing potential and shaping the professional future for themselves and their employees, and in exchanging ideas about this.
What does a supply chain manager actually do? And what does it mean to manage global supply chains? What career opportunities does logistics offer? A FireCamp provides insights into the variety of logistics. Here, logisticians, HR and company managers meet interested young people for a dialog.
For a tour, participants also receive a stamp pass with which they can visit exhibitors' stands.
The task: to get information and collect stamps from the exhibitors. In the Attractive prizes for full stamp cards will be raffled off in the final round.
Growing article diversity, omni-channel logistics, 24/7 availability: these are the requirements t h a t supply chains in the consumer goods industry and retail must meet a s standard today. At the same time, capacities are becoming scarcer and more cost-intensive. Sustainable supply chains are the answer for more efficiency and resilience in retail logistics. Strategies and measures are as diverse as the companies themselves; cooperation is often a reinforcing factor. This session is part of a cooperation between BVL, EHI Retail Institute and GS1 Germany, which also includes the annual trade logistics congress Log in Cologne.
During the session, participating companies in the "Lean & Green" initiative in Germany will be recognized for their success in reducing their CO2 emissions in transport and logistics processes and for taking ecological responsibility.
There is currently an enormous shortage of skilled workers in logistics. While competitors still rely on outdated recruiting methods, I'll show you a method with which you can leverage large personnel resources.
