With its port infrastructures and hinterland transport connections, the North German economic region is not only a key transshipment hub but also the gateway for global flows of goods. The region's seaports handle the lion's share of freight shipments for German industry and serve as the point of entry for consumer goods and raw material imports as well as the point of departure for the worldwide export of products manufactured by German companies. Hamburg was named "European Green Capital" in 2011 and the outstanding services it provides as a logistics location underlines the success of the logistics sector in ensuring sustainable infrastructural and economic development on the road to continued growth. It is therefore only fitting that the core themes of the 8th HanseLog in 2011 are green ports, green facility concepts and energy efficiency, with particular emphasis on projects in the North and Baltic Sea regions of Germany.
